Cascading New Knowledge Applying it Locally

Cascading new knowledge by applying it locally is a challenge to me. Indonesia is in large-scale social restriction now where outings are forbidden. Teachers employ ‘work from home’ and the students use ‘study from home’ mode. This new situation suggests me at least three activities in cascading new knowledge to my English fellow teachers in Cianjur region.

First, I will cascade new knowledge by talking the idea from this course by using WhatsApp (WA) group chat. All teachers in Cianjur region have WA, thanks to the provincial rule that force teachers to report their work from home presence using K-Mob application where teacher forced to have an android. Since I am the chief of English teacher association in Cianjur region, I feel confident that the idea from this course will be welcomed. Most of the teacherss in Cianjur region find it difficult to join continuous professional development. The thing that worries me is the unstable internet connection for the teachers who live in the remote area.

Secondly, I will try online sharing through Facebook or Instagram. Facebook and Instagram are familiar social media among teachers in Cianjur. Often time, before this, I use them to share ideas in teaching. I can use closed group to cascade new knowledge. I am very eager to share Deep Reflection to sharpen teachers’ analytical thinking. Reflection is a new thing to me; I believe my fellow English teachers are too. They will vey interested to know how to reflect teaching. The difficulties that may prevent them to join is that this month is the fasting month. The work time is shorter. Additionally, May and June are the time for teachers to prepare final test and write students’ achievement reports that consume teachers' working time.

Third, I will run a model lesson that incorporates critical thinking and reflection that I get from this course. I can use Zoom or Cisco Webex to model it. I can share how to develop an effective lesson plan that helps the students reach the teaching goal optimally. Even though I feel a bit afraid that not all teachers can join this webinar since the internet connection is not stable especially for those who live in remote areas. However, I can make a videotape for it, upload it on YouTube and then share its link. Questions and discussion can use WA group chat.

Those four paragraphs I wrote above is a kind of respond when I asked how to cascade new knowlwdge that I get from the course. To propose the right method in this difficult time is not easy. Sharing ideas through training is quite common and always acceptable in this country. However, when it is moved to a different culture, I believe a little resistance arrise. One of the reasons for it is related to certificate. It sounds funny, but it is! My fellow English teahcers will ask 'will we get certificate that show we had join this CPD?' Well, good luck for me.
