Imam Syafi'i and Those Who Were Envious of Him, Part 9 (4)
The Iraqi clerics looked at among others for a while, none of them was able to answer the question. Cold sweat started to trickle down their foreheads. After they were silent for a long time, the Caliph said to Imam Ash-Shafi'i, "Tell them the answer!"
After the clerics who wanted to overthrow Ash-Shafi'i in the eyes of the caliph who loved him very much because of his knowledge and piety were pushed into a difficult situation, Imam Ash-Shafi'i said, "This man left two daughters, a mother and a wife, twelve brothers and a sister. His two daughters received two-thirds of 400 dirhams, the mother received one-sixth of 100 dirhams, the wife received one-eighth of 75 dirhams, the twelve brothers received 24 dirhams , then he left one dirham for his sister. Caliph Harun Ar-Rashid smiled at his answer and said, "May Allah multiply people like you in my family." Then he gave a thousand dirhams and Imam Ash-Shafi'i accepted the money. Then he distributed it to the palace maids and servants.
